The Present Day Traffic Safety Vests Was Made To Save Lives
Many of us spend our working hours in an office cubicle. There are few real dangers other than file cabinets and virtually no chance of being accidentally killed. When it first appeared around forty years ago, worker injuries due to highway accidents declined and as a result, today's highway maintenance employees are required to wear them at all times. They are commonly constructed of a polyester/nylon blend fabric with reflective striping added for extra visibility.
Up To Standards
The responsibility for upholding 21st century worker protective clothing standards falls under the control of the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). These agencies routinely update requirements for safety garments. Today, this clothing must not only be comfortable to wear but must also be highly resistant to water and fire.
Due to differing professional needs, there are a variety of designs available. Each item must meet certain quality benchmarks, including sturdy construction and durable fabric. Each must also pass a number of hurdles, including maximum brightness, resistance to color fading and a demonstrably long life. Even the reflective strips are evaluated critically by an objective third party before being approved.
Different ANSI Classes
Unique work environments require distinct clothing categories appropriate to the situation. Off-road maintenance engineers and parking lot attendants with lower risk duties usually wear a Class 1 vest. Class 2 is required for workers among vehicles traveling under 25 miles per hour. The most dangerous jobs call for a Class 3 design, especially in areas where the oncoming traffic moves in excess of 50 miles per hour.
Colors
Standard colors for these protective garments are extremely bright and highly visible, including fluorescent orange, yellow, and lime-green. Blue is sometimes worn by emergency response personnel in order to differentiate those workers at an accident site. Other kinds of employees may have their profession imprinted on the exterior, including firefighters, police officers, and security workers.
Which Do You Need?
Purchasing agents responsible for ordering this clothing for their work force check often for updated standards and new features. One sign of the times is the emergence of a garment designed for those who must respond to incidents of urban terrorist activity. Other areas require vests specifically designed to hold up in all weather, including extremes of both heat and cold.
