Now That Spring Has Finally Arrived, There Are Plenty Of Opportunities To Head Out Of The House And Soak Up The Sunshine

Finally it appears that spring is just around the corner, and following a couple of days of heavy frost and cold evenings, today the sun is shining and the sky is clear. Although I have many things that need doing indoors, the chance to feel the warm sunlight is a big distraction and I’ve just been out walking for a while.

Whilst I live in a reasonably big village, it’s always quiet during the day, and once across the main road in front of my abode I am immediately on a footpath leading across the fields. There is a slight incline to start with and once over the top of that there is virtually no human noise evident at all.

This track is my favoured local walk. Across the first field, heading down to cross a single track back lane, and then another incline over a second field which leads to a compact wood on top of the mound. The woods are not a public right of way, but the owners share them with the villagers by providing stiles to aid access, cleared pathways and a couple of benches for the rambler who wants to take a short breather.

When it’s summer, the trees are covered in foliage, and squirrels and birds are all over the place. A lot of the trees in the wood are sweet chestnuts and in the autumn the ground is a carpet of unwanted fruits. But spring hasn’t yet taken hold and today the branches are bare and the woodland creatures are quiet save for a few birds in the distance.

Today I have an additional reason for wishing to visit the woods. An acquaintance and I have been asked to come up with a video to promote an acoustic song recorded by some musicians we know. We have an idea, but have been waiting for the right conditions to get some video footage and today is the first occasion when the weather has been good enough to film outdoors.

Unfortunately, my friend is away from the area at the moment, so I have to depend on my video talents. Getting the filming done is a problem because I have defective vision, so I have to utilise my glasses to see the video equipment, but take them off to look into the distance to be able to see what I’m videoing. It’s really quite frustrating! Now and again I ponder whether I should ask about Laser eye surgery, but I really don’t know if Laser eye treatment is appropriate for whatever is wrong with my eyes, and anyway, I believe it’s very expensive.

But anyway, I have stuck at it and should now have sufficient images for us to start creating the video. I have filmed the sun’s rays breaking through the trees, the path twisting through the woods, the vast sweep of the fields heading towards the marshes and the river in the distance, and the massive cargo ships making their way up the river to offload their containers further upstream (though the latter bit isn’t for our film concept!).

Fortunately, my friend has good eyesight, so when it comes to the complicated business of fitting all the material together with the other footage we have filmed previously, she will get on with the majority of the work and will call on me and my ropey eyesight to look at and comment on early edits, and tweak the music if and when necessary. Luckily, my ears more than compensate for my eyes, and I have exceptionally good hearing and also a well tuned musical ear. Perhaps I should steer clear of the idea of Laser eye surgery just in case my hearing gets worse when it’s been carried out so that my eyes and ears are back on level ground!

At the end of the day, the video will soon be created and uploaded to various relevant music websites, and perhaps people will enjoy it. It would be great to get some complimentary feedback and possibly have the opportunity to collaborate with the same band again. And possibly we could really make some profit with it, and then I could afford to consider the idea of Laser eye treatment, so that I can get footage for other projects without the constant requirement to take my glasses on and off throughout the filming process.
