Factors Why Some Individuals Read Slowly
Reading slowly becomes an ingrained habit for many people. As children we are educated to read, of course, but instruction in reading generally stops after we have shown a mastery of the basics, and then we are more or less left to our own devices. There is also the fear that lots of people have that if we manage to read faster, we’ll miss something, or we won’t fully comprehend or enjoy what we’re reading if we skip a few words.
The following are reasons affecting reading speed.
Focus
There is no alternative of concentration to improve speed-reading. No matter what the technique readers follow without concentration he cannot achieve the ultimate understanding of the material.
Vocabulary
Good knowledge of vocabulary is essential in speed-reading process. Many readers have a little idea about many words. Most of the time we are stuck in the middle of the reading and try to find out the meaning of those. According to Rauch and Weinstein, any systematic plan to improve vocabulary will have a positive effect upon speed of comprehension and speed reading rate.
Attitude
Another thing that leads to a kid becoming a slow reader is cultivating a negative attitude towards reading. Some of the bad reading habits that individuals possess they have nurtured over a lifetime. Being taught by a slow reader is especially detrimental to a child since he or she might pass on some bad reading habits to the child. Thinking that reading is boring, or that watching a movie, or playing computer games instead of reading is not going to help a child read any faster.
A child will just become restless and anxious to get the task of reading over with if he or she is burdened with this variety of mentality. With training, you can break these habits and significantly improve your reading speed.
Subvocalisation
Subvocalization means saying the words quietly to yourself while you read.
Focus

Word-by-Word reading
The "span of recognition" is the size of the part of text that you can see in one go, or at one "fixation" .So, if you can increase the size of the text you see at each fixation, then naturally you will improve your reading speed. The idea is for you to have a wider eye span wherein you can capture 2 to 4 words at a glance then eventually progress to whole sentences then whole paragraphs.
All the above stated factors are greatly responsible for slowing down the speed of your reading. For attaining the ability of speed reading, you should be able to read about two to three times faster then the speed at which you can speak. Doing frequent practice and following simple tactics, anyone can get the skill of fast reading.
