Relax And Take A Holiday In Historical Lanzarote And Enjoy Its Volcanic Heritage
The Canarian island of El Hierro may well receive an influx of volcano enthusiasts in the near future, following the recent flurry of seismic activity. Whilst for those who would rather study dormant craters, the island of Lanzarote, which has 300 odd volcanoes, is perhaps a better bet.
The latter´s pedigree as a volcanic island is well established, although there has been no noticeable seismic activity on Lanzarote for at least the last hundred years. It is however, the location of the longest recorded eruptions and the subsequent volcanic debris has been turned into its best tourist attraction. Visitors can enjoy a tour through the main areas of the devastation, with panoramic views of the fiery coloured craters that form the Timanfaya National Park. They can also sample food cooked over the geothermal heat that seeps out of the ground at the Park´s unique restaurant. The keenest crater enthusiasts will soon find out that there are plenty more spots worth visiting in other regions of the island, to illustrate the Jameos del Agua´s museum of volcanoes. And the attraction of Jameos del Agua which in turn occupies the lengthiest subterranean volcanic tunnel in the world, moulded by Monte Corona´s past eruptions.
For those who want to explore the entire volcanic region, much the best method is to arrange car hire in Lanzarote and travel through the wine region of La Geria and the natural volcano park that lies just outside Timanfaya. Each of these areas is the result of volcanic activity, although they were formed at different time periods.
It is a testament to how resourceful the local residents are that some of the land is still used for the cultivation of vines and other crops. Several of the leading bodegas in La Geria regularly win awards for the wines they produce by this unique method of cultivation.
For those visitors who are based in one of the many hotels in Lanzarote, there is the option of choosing a day trip or excursion instead of undertaking the driving oneself. The vast majority of excursions include a pick up and drop off to the hotel´s front door.
Even though volcanology might not be your bag, there's always a lot more that the island can provide visitors of any age, anywhere from professional sports and activities to local culture, so its not a revelation that numerous holidaymakers keep on returning. And possibly you are going to too.
