Several Facts Concerning Safety Vests
safety vest are an important piece of equipment for construction workers, but are often overlooked and under appreciated. Focus always seems to fall to hard hats, goggles, and steel toed boots. However, vests not only protect workers from debris, but make them visible to cars, especially at night when visibility in regular clothes is only about 250 feet. The following article will take a look at their high importance and give some general information about them.
Types of Material
There are 3 different material types that these can be made out of, depending on your situation. The most widely used is polyester, as it is appropriate for most all places. It is durable and light, providing both protection and comfort. Vinyl can also be used. It is more reflective than others and can handle a wider variety of weather conditions. A road crew may choose this if they primarily work at night or in rainy weather. The third material that can be used is mesh. More lightweight, these are ideal for the summertime or particularly warm climates, as they allow for more breathing room in the fabric, keeping a worker cooler. These materials are also offered for other protective gear, such as lime t-shirt.
Color and Reflective Material
The most typical color seen is a standard bright orange, just like is used in road signs, traffic cones, and other pieces of equipment. However, sometimes workers may want to be sure to differentiate themselves from all this other equipment and may choose a different color, such as lime green or bright yellow. Reflective properties are not required during the day, but night workers must either have reflective material sewn in or wear LED lights.
Obtaining Safety Certifications
There are many institutes that are responsible for certifying safety vests. The first is ANSI. This is the American National Standards Institute, and it provides your most basic, general recommendations. ANSI works side by side with ISEA, the International Safety Equipment Association to develop these standards. OSHA is also important. This is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. They look at ANSI recommendations and clarify them even further for more specific situations. However, the final authority falls under the FHWA, or Federal Highway Administration. This group gives the final approval on all equipment, declaring it safe for use.
The Different Classifications
As not all vests offer the same level of protection, they are broken down into three groups, based on what kind of situation they are appropriate for. Class One provides the least amount of protection, and is designed for use far removed from traffic and roadways. ANSI will not certify this class since it cannot be used around traffic. Class two offers a medium level of protection. These are designed for use in areas where traffic will be very light, and not moving more than 25 miles per hour. They can be certified, but only with strict limitations. Class three is used most often, and provides the most protection. It is designed to be used in all other more dangerous conditions, such as expressways or busy traffic. This class must be certified in order to be considered safe.
It is obvious that one should not just dismiss safety vest. They are no less important than any other part of a construction worker's uniform, and it takes just as much care to choose the right kind. Another viable option for safety is the lime t-shirt, which are also proven to be successful.
