Star rubies are extraordinarily rare. Worldwide production today is yielding a minute quantity of fine stars, particularly in sizes above 5 carats. Today, out of each 100 coarse rubies mined, only 3 will have stars obvious after being cut into cabochons. Out of these 3, one will have a poor color but a good star, one will have a poor star but a good color and a single out of hundred will have both a good star and a good color! Most original sources of star rubies like Mogok, Burma have completely run straight out of supplies.
