Trout Fishing Tactics to Make Your Lure More Appealing by Jeffrey Lorow
So you know where the trout are hiding, in fact everyone around you are catching fish - why aren't the trout striking at your lure?
Step one is to get your spinner as close the fish as you can. Trout don't want to expend a lot of energy chasing after prey - and most streams have enough life in them that they can let a potential meal go by if they feel like their odds of actually catching them are low. So your best chance to entice a strike is to get your lure within one or two feet of the fish. Keep in mind that this distance is vertical as well as horizontal, so be sure your spinner is sinking deep enough before reeling in.
Now you're letting your lure sink and they're still not biting? How fast are you retrieving your lure? The most basic lure is to reel it in as fast as you can, so the fish don't have time to think about what they're about to bit down on. Also the faster you bring a spinner in, the faster the blade will rotate and it will draw more attention from hungry trout.
The catch-22 here is that the faster you retrieve your lure, the closer to the surface it will travel. That's why I like using shaft-in-blade spinners like those manufactured by Panther Martin or the Mepps XD series. These lures will travel deeper than a Mepps Aglia, Blue Fox or Rooster Tail.
If you're finding that you're still not catching fish, there are a couple other things you can do to help entice a strike. The first runs counter to my last piece of advice - slow it down.
Don't slow it down for your entire retrieval, just sporadically to let the lure sink or maybe give the trout a chance to catch it. Briefly slowing your lure down could also make it appear vulnerable to a trout, like a wounded baitfish or injured crawdad. Letting your lure sink at the right time will also allow it to drop into some holes that might get missed during a straight, fast retrieval.
Another trick you might like to try is to have your spinner change directions. You can accomplish this by moving your rod from one side of your body to the other. When your lure is moving in a straight line, it might look artificial and unsavory to a trout. But if it occasionally changes direction - a tactic often used by prey trying to evade a predator - it will appear more natural and more likely to be a part of a trout's normal diet.
Trout can be very circumspect and can become very unwilling to strike if they think something is afoot. By making these few changes to your fishing style you can increase your chances a strike and a tasty trout dinner at the end of the day.
