Lawsuits Filed For Birth Defects Caused By Zoloft
Zoloft, an antidepressant medication manufactured by Pfizer received numerous complaints due to its association with birth defects. It has been reported that a number of women who took the medication when they were pregnant gave birth to babies with heart defects. Craniosynostosis, a kind of skull deformity is also associated with Zoloft use in pregnant women. Another is that infants had alarming symptoms like seizures, tremors, irritability, frequent crying and decreased oxygen in the blood. Birth defects were not the only ones mentioned because questions were raised if Zoloft increases suicidal thoughts in already depressed patients. A number of other complaints and lawsuits were raised against this medication but the majority is related to birth defects.
How Zoloft Works
Zoloft is a medication primarily prescribed for patients suffering from major depression. It belongs to the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) class which means that it increases the uptake of serotonin in the brain. The neurotransmitter serotonin is “excitatory” in nature and plays a role in building our mood. Low levels of serotonin in the brain can manifest depression while high levels can show signs of mania. Zoloft is also used in other cases like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Panic Disorders, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and mood-related disorders.
How Zoloft Affects the Growing Fetus
As mentioned earlier, lawsuits were filed because of reported Zoloft birth defects. Research shows that Zoloft can affect the growing fetus even when taken during the third trimester when organogenesis is done, as this phenomenon occurs in the first trimester of pregnancy. As a result, heart complications occur. The most common are the septal defects, Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) and Atrial Septal Defect (ASD). These are rather serious conditions when left untreated. A lung condition called Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN) can also happen, athough the chances are slim. PPHN is marked by constricted arteries leading to the lungs hence making the baby unable to fully adapt to the life outside the womb. The amount of blood that is carried onto the lungs will be very limited which will result to limited oxygenation into the bloodstream. The mentioned Zoloft birth defects are serious and can be life threatening which prompted the affected individuals to file for lawsuits.
