Will an EMS Device Give Me Six-Pack Abs?

EMS (electric muscle stimulation) is sometimes called electromyostimulation and employs electrical impulses to induce muscle contractions. These portable devices come with detachable electrode pads. The electrode pads convey the impulses to the skin. Before applying the electrode pads to the skin they are usually lubricate in order to provide proper conduction of the current. The most common device is a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) unit. Such devices have proven useful in the treatment of sprains, low back pain and patients with arthritis.

Electrical muscle stimulators are regulated by the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. As such, the FDA is responsible for regulating the sale of these devices throughout the United States. To be able to sell these devices, legally, companies must submit to the FDA's pre-market regulatory requirements. In most cases, any MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form that have been approved by the FDA are used for physical therapy and rehabilitation under the direction of a health care professional. If a company plans to sell MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form for home use, they would need to prove to the FDA that they can be used safely and effectively in that setting.

A number of electronic muscle stimulators have been cleared by the FDA for use in treating specific medical conditions. Doctors use electric muscle stimulation for such things as muscle re-education, relief of muscle spasms, increasing range of motion, the prevention of muscle atrophy and for treating conditions resulting from stroke, serious injury or major surgery. These devices are generally intended to help patients with impaired muscle function due to some medical condition and not to increase specific muscles enough to affect their appearance.

Any devices which have not been approved by the FDA are not legal. The FDA has not had the opportunity to ascertain if they are safe and effective.

Even though an EMS device allows the temporary strengthening, toning or firming of a muscle, there has been no EMS device yet cleared for weight loss, girth reduction or for creating those "rock hard" abs.

An EMS device alone will not produce those "six-pack" abs. However, applying an electric current to muscles may make them contract. While the repeated stimulation of your muscles using electrical current can tone and strengthen, the only way to actually change your appearance is by eating a sensible diet and doing regular exercise.

The manufacturer of a medical device should be informed of any malfunctions. In addition, you can submit a report to MedWatch, the FDA's voluntary reporting program. There are several ways to submit a report to MedWatch: MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form online, by telephone at 1-800-FDA-1088; by FAX at 1-800-FDA-0178; or by mail to MedWatch, Food and Drug Administration, HF-2, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20857
