Explaining LEDs and How They Work
There are more electronic devices that have LEDS (Light Emitting Diodes) then you can probably imagine. Large screen televisions and digital clocks are just a few of the devices that have LEDs. Other common uses include:

Understanding the Basic Principles of LEDs
You may think that an LED is just a small light bulb, but it isn’t. The flow of electricity actually illuminates a semiconductor material which the LED is made of. They are capable of emitting light across the visible, ultraviolet, and infrared wavelengths, making then extremely flexible lighting solutions.
The principle of LEDs and their ability to work stems from the principle of electroluminescence. When current flows across a diode, negative electrons drop into positive holes traveling in the opposite direction. Since the electrons are higher in energy they release some in the form of light. The distance of that drop determines both light output and color. LEDs can only be made of semiconducting material that allows for this type of energy transfer.
What is a Diode?
A diode is composed of a semiconducting material that has a changeable degree of conductivity. Electricity travels through a diode in only one direction. This makes diodes ideal for converting AC current into DC. They are also used to extract modulation from radio signals in radio receivers.
LEDs vs. Conventional Lighting
In contrast from traditional lighting, LEDs don’t burn out since they do not have filaments which cause this in traditional lights. As a result, there is far less heat produced and they have a much longer life than the incandescent bulbs. This makes them better for use in PCB prototyping, where excess heat is a common problem, than incandescents.
While they may be more expensive to purchase off the bat, LEDs are much more efficient than either Compact Florescent Laps (DFL) or incandescent lights so in the long run, they end up saving you money. LEDs are truly the perfect option for a many lighting needs even though they are more expensive to purchase. Another bonus is that LEDs are safer since their energy results in far less heat than high-temperature incandescent light bulbs.
