When life gets tough, the tough get going. We've all heard that cliché before. Yet, some of the toughest people I've met aren't people you'd necessarily look at and think as being tough.
People like a 5-foot-2 girls soccer player, a 150-pound linebacker, a self-described non-athlete who ran a marathon and a swim coach who beat breast cancer.
Just this fall I reported on a high school girls soccer match when the coach told me about a special player. His 5-2 defender had suffered a torn retina after being hit in the face with a soccer ball two years ago and blew out her anterior cruciate ligament (knee) in the final preseason game last fall. She returned to action a little over a year later this September and I watched her compete with great respect. The little dynamo wears protective goggles - two eye doctors told her not to play, to save her one eye with sight; and one said only with goggles. She also wears a big knee brace. Incidentally, her coach said the ball that blinded her one eye had to have been a bit under inflated and had some give to it, because
an inflated ball would not have been able to penetrate the eye orbital.
I asked this high school sophomore, "Why keep playing? Why not hang the shoes up and do something less physical?"
She said, "Because I've played soccer since I was in kindergarten. It's what I love to do and I like to be a part of helping the team."
That soccer player got hurt playing her sport. A swim coach I've reported on and a one-armed linebacker overcame adversity that was out their control. The swim coach beat breast cancer and a big reason she credits was because of her physical conditioning as an athlete and continued physical training whenever possible while undergoing chemo. The high school linebacker lost an arm in a farming accident as a 4-year-old, but through hard work and determination actually led his team in interceptions and went to the state meet in wrestling. He is stronger mentally and physically than many people with no disability.
A woman I know volunteered to run a marathon and raise money when she saw a flier advertising for people to help the Leukemia Society Team in Training. This woman had never earned a varsity sports letter or ran farther than 4 miles before that, but heard a calling since the race fell on her birthday (May 23). Although she ran and walked, and stopped to have trainers address foot and knee problems along the route, the woman
completed all 26.2 miles of the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon course. She narrowly made it to some of the checkpoints in time to avoid being told she'd have to stop. To this day she calls it an all-time life highlight: "From that day on, I feel like I can do anything I put my mind to," she said.
None of us invite adversity into our lives, but if we can fight through it, it will make us stronger. The Navy Seals are known for pushing candidates through a rigorous 4-mile, timed run. When the exhausted Seals cross the finish line, often puking soon after, they are told it's actually a 10-mile run.
Life can throw us curveballs in many different ways, but if you can preserver then you'll be better off for it. Pushing yourself with exercise and fitness can often play an important role in that process.
So don't give up - the finish line to beating the obstacle in front of you may not be as far away as it appears.
