Fifth Wheel Trailers - Benefits To Consider
5th wheel trailers are among the biggest, most luxurious, and pricey RVs. They can sleep up to 8 folks, and have a number of slide outs - some as much as five. This, needless to say, adds drastically to the weight, which affects gas mileage. They are identifiable from the downward aimed hitch pin which is attached under the front overhang. This hitch pin connects inside the bed of a pick up truck on top of the rear axle.
The 5th wheel trailers are set up and equipped with options and gear just like a conventional travel trailer. They can be unhitched as well - while parked and not in use. Many versions are quite big, making them luxurious travel trailers and so are basically a home away from home.
Structure
5th Wheel Trailers are basically designed with an elevated forward area which can be stretched over the bed of a sport utility or pickup truck. The over-all length of the fifth wheel configuration can thus be six-feet shorter compared with other trailer setups. This is what makes for a far better driving experience: To begin with, the turning radius is sharper, resulting in less need to 'swing wide' around turns.
How The Fifth Wheel Trailer Is Connected To The Tow Vehicle
A "kingpin" points down from the bottom of the forward part of trailer. It is engaged by a specialized trailer hitch - usually based in the bed of a pickup truck. This fifth wheel hitch (the 'female' part of the hitch) is generally fitted directly above or slightly forward of the rear axle of the pickup truck. The portion of the connecting hardware that will be installed to the tow vehicle is called the fifth wheel hitch.
The layout of the 5th wheel keeps a weight distribution that gives ideal ride traits and fuel economy. They are relatively easy to tow in comparison to conventional travel trailers, given that the load is positioned on top of the towing vehicle instead of behind it. The downward pressing weight on the tow vehicle is not over the back bumper, as with traditional hitches.
Note that the heavier weight of the average fifth wheel could make towing one with a conventional ball hitch dangerous and normally out of the question. For one thing, the back tires of the tow vehicle wouldn't take the increased weight. Additionally, the front tires of the tow vehicle could practically be off the ground, considering all the weight pressing down rear of the rear axle.
Consequently the layout of the fifth wheel trailer is beneficial for a variety of reasons. Along with following properly behind the tow vehicle, gas mileage is as good as possible considering the heavier weight.
When Airbrakes Are Needed
Airbrakes are essential on all trailers that weigh more than 12,000 lbs. GTW (Gross Trailer Weight). The tow vehicle itself has to be equipped with airbrakes. Electric brakes or electric over hydraulic brakes will be allowed on a few specialized fifth wheel trailers over 12,000 GTW when up to 50 percent of the weight stays in the towing truck.
8-Foot Beds A Necessity
Pick-ups having standard 8' long beds have adequate clearance in between the cab of the truck and the forward end of the trailer during sharp turns. But yet trucks having six foot long “short-beds” will make the front of the trailer impact the cab in sharp turns.
So the fifth wheel trailer is a great option if you are looking into selecting a travel trailer for going camping, family trips, and/or even living in it. A number of them come with laundry rooms, including all the other appliances that you'd expect in a family home. You can enjoy the luxuries of a high-end motor home, but for a great deal less money.
