The University of Kansas? Medical Center has proved to be a great source for the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital's nursing staff; to experience the latest in the field. The nurses working in rural hospitals now have a chance, of working at the city hospital, through their programs; but for small assignments. Not only does the program, give these nurses a chance to work with unfamiliar cases; but also compensates the staff requirement of the medical center; that is short of the same.

So far, the only participating hospital is the 35-bed hospital in Ulysses. 12 nurses of the 26 working there took advantage of this opportunity. Surprisingly, several nurses have already placed a visit to the center where they rotate their 8 to 12 hour shifts for about 3 to 4 days. One of the most enthusiastic people to participate in this program is a 35 year old registered nurse, having spent the previous 5 years in Ulysses. Her services have been assigned to the hematology unit of the Kansas medical Center where she took care of bone marrow, kidney and liver transplant patients. The nurses are flown on their outreach plane and housed at the medical center during their scheduled stops to western Kansas.

Administrator, Bob Wilson Hospital says that there is a lot of potential in the program not only for his hospital but for the neighborhood hospitals too. This program is a lifetime opportunity to get the best experience at nursing by working with state of the art equipment at the tertiary care level.

He also hopes that the knowledge, gained by the participating staff, benefits the rest of the staff and ultimately the patients. That's a tremendous advantage. The program has been designed to serve a dual purpose, as per the director of the center. He says that the nursing shortage is maintained with this program while at the same time; hard working nurses do get to enhance their skills apart from getting a full time work opportunity. And it was surprising to see how well they fit in. She said that they provide some instruction, but they are good practitioners and good workers. The staff is also glad to work with such people. Nurses frequently drive to Kansas City from Manhattan, Fort Scott, Paola and Topeka for part time work at the medical center. The Kansas City medical center allows two to three to fly back at one time. One of the passenger nurses said that traveling east, from Ulysses to Kansas, requires much preparation, but is definitely worth it.

Though it's a time and efforts consuming process, she would certainly go again. The nurse who is a mother of two children, aged 8 and fourteen, supports her and want a bright career for her. She hopes that they will soon reap the benefits of that education which they might be able to use back home efficiently.
