Ted Nugent - Fred Bear [Lyrics]
The Fred Allen Show Was An Old Time Radio Shows Classic
Fred Allen was the star of the long-running "The Fred Allen Show" that aired from 1932-1949, although it went my many names. Many listeners would tune in on Sundays to hear the comedian provide them with hours of entertainment.
Eventually, Allen got the perfect Old Time Radio Shows together which focused on making fun of the news of the day. He was an avid reader of nine different newspapers and used clippings to help build a script. Often he used lesser-known news items to create a comic centerpiece for his show.
Born in 1893 in Cambridge, MA, Fred grew up with his aunt following his mother's passing at an early age. As a child he took piano lessons and later he worked for the Boston Public Library. In addition, he began learning to juggle. Thanks to the pushing together of these interests, he could see how comedy works and so improve his skills to reflect his understanding.
He started his comical career when he competed in multiple contests. Performing in vaudeville influenced productions allowed him to travel the world. "The Passing Show" soon drew Fred away from vaudeville and to Broadway theater. It was while working on this show he met his wife, Portland Hoffa.
Eventually, he kick started his career in old time radio shows when he presented The Linit Bath Review on CBS Radio. By 1933 his show was known as the Salad Bowl Review, following a change in sponsor to Hellman's Mayonnaise. Come 1934 he presented the Sal Hepatica Revue, which later became better known as the Hour of Smiles. After a few months, the show was re-named as Town Hall Tonight, and soon become The Fred Allen Show.
Until late June 1949, The Fred Allen Show continued to go strong. As time passed, Portland his wife would join him as his partner in comedy crime. Having had a long-running feud with real friend Jack Benny, Allen gained greater popularity.
With Benny, Allen started a so-called public 'feud'. In actuality, the whole thing just happened by chance, and as listeners enjoyed the funny elements to it all, the writers and the comedians were told to meet in order to maximize on the popularity opportunity. It became a legendary feud though the two entertainers were very amicable. In fact, the two appeared in two films together, Love Thy Neighbor and It's In the Bag!
Eventually, these Old Time Radio Shows finished, and so Fred featured more on The Big Show. Writing was one outlet he took full advantage of in order to fully express his thoughts. He wrote two autobiographic books, Treadmill to Oblivion and Much Ado About Me.
During a walk in the late night, Fred Allen had a heart attack which was fatal, he passed away at 61 years of age. In 1988, he was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. Though he is no longer living, his old-time radio recordings and books stands as a reminder of his true wit and humor.
