The link between critical thinking and expressive communication are constantly explored in the English Composition class. Using various forms of literature, this course demands that students formulate opinions and articulate conclusive viewpoints in composition format. Reading and interpreting short stories is one of the literature methods used to develop these skills.
English Composition is learned throughout primary, middle, and high school. And, it carries over to college as well. The learning strategy for the course is nothing you haven’t learned before. Students develop intense critical thinking skills and enhance writing techniques through the dissection of basic story elements: plot, point of view, setting, characters, and theme.
The plot is the basis of the story. One of the aspects of the plot is conflict. Conflict is used to maintain tension so that the reader remains interested. Students of English Composition learn how to identify the various forms of conflict and write how conflict is used - between a character and nature, character and society, between characters, or within a character.
Characters are the people who are involved in the story, and are considered to be the most important element because the story centers on them. Character traits define the character, and a good English Composition student would be able to identify the four ways in which a character is developed: appearance, action, dialogue, and monologue, and write descriptive compositions on how each trait was exemplified. Inferring a character’s traits is an important part of reading.
Setting is a valuable element for a story. In some instances setting is unimportant, but in other cases, setting is integral to the stories’ effectiveness. The learned four dimensions of setting, time period, weather, time of day, and location will help the student determine whether the setting is important, and if so, what is the connection to the plot and/or characters.
English Composition students must learn and understand the importance of what point of view the story is written. The point of view element is critical to comprehending the characters and events that occur within the storyline. The four points of view are Omniscient (God-like narration); Objective viewpoint (immediate scene only); First person (one character, using the pronoun “I”); and Limited omniscient (third person).
The last element of a story is the theme. This ingredient requires more critical thinking than any other story element, because the theme is the underlying meaning of the story, and explores general truths about human nature. Themes can be explicit, open and clear within the story, or implicit, meaning implied or inferred. Some stories may have multidimensional themes. Analytical skills are needed to explore and make theme conclusions, and good writing skills are required to articulate in written form.
Your college English Composition course is excellent for developing critical thinking skills, strengthening articulation and expressive communication, and improving writing proficiencies. By reading various forms of literature and understanding the role story elements play, students learn how to effectively analyze written works and persuasively express their opinions in composition format.
