English Composition helps students learn how to organize and present ideas in an effective and persuasive manner. The Language Arts course is essential for building critical thinking skills by challenging students to explore the meaning behind the words and then express them in composition form. Reading and reflecting short stores is one of the many methods used to develop interpretation and composition skills.

English Composition is learned throughout primary, middle, and high school. And, it carries over to college as well. The learning strategy for the course is nothing you haven’t learned before. Students develop intense critical thinking skills and enhance writing techniques through the dissection of basic story elements: plot, point of view, setting, characters, and theme.

A plot reveals what the story is about. And, within the plot is an element called conflict. Conflict is essential to a story because it is what keeps us glued to the book to learn the final outcome. English Composition students learn how to identify conflict, which can be between characters, nature, society, etc. and determine how effectively it is used. Conflict identification is a keen strategy for building critical thinking.

Characters are often the most important element because the story is centered around them. Fully developed characters are instilled with traits that divulge their persona. English Composition students will learn how to infer character traits by studying descriptive dialogue, monologue, appearance, and action. Examining and concluding character traits is a valuable strategy to enhance reading proficiencies.

In most stories, setting is an integral part of the story’s effectiveness. Consequently, English Composition students must be able to recognize what types of settings are used and what connection they have to the plots and characters. The four dimensions of setting are location, weather, time period, and time of day. Identifying specific settings and understanding their roles in the story requires deep analysis and probing, as many writers aim to make the setting a viable character.

Understanding the points of view by which stories are written is essential to understanding characters and the events of a story. In the English Composition class, students will get a solid grasp of the four points of view: first person, which is told through the eyes of one character; omniscient, which narrated by an all-knowing God-like storyteller; limited omniscient, which reveals only the thoughts of one character; and objective viewpoint, which makes readers the eyewitnesses to the story.

The theme is the underlying meaning of a story, and it embodies general truths about human nature. Determining the theme of a story requires good critical thinking skills, as themes can be explicit (open and clearly stated) or implicit (indirect and inferred). Some stories have more than one theme, making it even more challenging to understand the purpose of the story. Consequently, English Composition students must explore, discover, reflect, and assess when surmising story themes and the messages they convey.

The English Language Composition course can be a challenge, because the curriculum forces students to exercise a part of the brain that most times does not get massaged. Students learn to view stories with a critical eye, making determinations about messages and underlining themes based on basic story elements. When story elements are mastered, students can successfully read for comprehension, effectively reflect on the overall theme, and articulate their expression in composition format.
