Digital Photography - Little Marketing Steps That Will Boost Your Photography Sales Part 2   by Martin Hurley

Many photographers think that the most important thing is the actual photography but I beg to differ. There's no doubting the importance of taking fresh, original photography on a regular basis of course - but if your marketing doesn't compliment that then who on earth ever gets to see your great work?

Anyway, you can still add your own creative flair and vision to your marketing. Here's how to do that using a small flyer or promo card as an example, which is about the size of 4 or 5 business cards put together.

These little photo promo cards are a cool way to get your name out there, plus you've got a LOT of white space to play with, so make sure you spend some 'thinking time' on the design aspect before anything else. In other words, crank up Photoshop or Illustrator and do some simple mockups using a few of your best images.

Although good design tends to look easy, it's often frustrating as heck trying to choose the right photos, fonts and overall feeling you're trying to get across. If that happens to you - call up a good designer immediately! Sometimes it's best to let the designers design. Nothing wrong with outsourcing some of the marketing either!

Basically if you're planning on giving this promo out to everyone and his brother then make sure it includes the usual stuff about you - a website that's 'live' and current, phone numbers, email, fax, social networking contacts, etc. Throw in a few examples of your best digital photography portfolio too.

And lastly, just remember that sometimes you'll get stuck with a whole bunch of these photo flyers or photo cards. You might print too many, or just not give enough away. Whichever it is, make sure that the essentials (your website/email/phone numbers) are what you'll be using for a good few years to come!
