Ultimately, it's really important to wear ankle boots that are fitting at the ankle. You don't want a wide ankle boot which leaves plenty of space and can be mistaken for a shoe which is oversize. Also the consideration of your dressing would actually matter. It is either much exposed legs or none whatsoever with the ankle boots!
