Could There Really Be Any kind of Preventative Value in Using Tissue Seat Covers on Toilets?

When you go into a stall in a public restroom, do you automatically pull one of those tissue seat covers out of its container and meticulously make sure that all the seat is covered? You'll probably avoid touching the seat by any means necessary if there are no covers available Most of us do this, because we grew up being told of the germs that lurk on the seats of public toilets just waiting to claim us as their next victim. Although it's really a hassle, we still do it anyway. Do you ever wonder if those covers are really effective though?

Most doctors will tell you that it's safe to stop using these toilet seat covers. Germs that cause STDs can't survive living on a toilet seat. Just think about it. How many people do you know who have actually been infected from sitting on a toilet seat? Whoever invented those paper covers made a lot of money selling peace of mind. You can go ahead and keep using one if it makes you feel better, but you really aren't accomplishing anything by doing so. Although thousands of people have sat on them before you, there is nothing contagious about the seats.

Medical professionals say that there are far greater dangers in public restrooms than the toilet seats. There are plenty of places that people touch that will harbor germs like handles and faucets. This is one of the reasons that modern restrooms have features such as walk-in hallways that don't require opening any doors and motion-sensitive flushing and water faucets that you don't have to touch to operate. These devices were designed to help eliminate sanitation problems in public restrooms.

The University of Arizona conducted an interesting study. Microbiologists conducted a study that compared bacteria on toilet seats with those found on telephone receivers. They found that the average receiver contained 25,000 bacteria per square inch. They only found about 49 bacteria per square inch on the toilet seats however though.
